About

Anahila Kanongata‘a is a distinguished leader with a strong legacy in governance, leadership, and community empowerment. As a former New Zealand Parliamentarian, she has been instrumental in shaping policies that protect and uplift communities, ensuring that cultural values remain at the heart of leadership and decision-making.

A Registered Social Worker with the Social Workers Registration Board of New Zealand and a Justice of the Peace, Anahila is deeply committed to service, advocacy, and social justice. Fluent in both Tongan and English, she bridges cultures to create meaningful connections, fostering inclusive leadership and empowering others to make a lasting impact.

Anahila Kanongata‘a leads with culture and empowers with purpose, ensuring that every voice is heard and valued. As a former Member of Parliament, she championed human rights, strengthened communities, and played a pivotal role in legislative development. Her leadership was instrumental in amending the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association constitution, securing greater representation for women in global governance.

Rooted in service and cultural leadership, Anahila chairs the Aotearoa Tongan Response Group, guiding critical initiatives that support and uplift communities. As President of Heilala Manongi ‘o Maungakiekie, P.A.C.I.F.I.C.A Inc., she has successfully amplified the voices of women and strengthened advocacy efforts across Aotearoa. Her leadership is a testament to the power of cultural values in creating a lasting impact.

A Legacy of Service and Advocacy

Anahila’s career is defined by advocacy, leadership, and community service. As a senior leader in social services, she managed multi-million-dollar budgets and shaped policies to support New Zealand’s most vulnerable.

Beyond governance, she led the Aotearoa Tongan Response Group, mobilizing critical aid for Tonga after the 2022 volcanic eruption and tsunami. Since 2014, she has given back to her high school, Onehunga High School, by developing and delivering the Fakatoukatea Leadership Programme free, empowering young leaders with cultural confidence.

Her legacy is one of service, resilience, and lasting impact.
